Books

Following every stage in my journey, I published a book to collect impressions and express views as a contemporary.

Books Published in English:

Life of a European Mandarin

An ironic glimpse of life in Europe’s corridors of power

On Europe, I published ‘Life of a European Mandarin’ portraying inner life in the European Commission and describing the tentacles of power still applying these days. It was favourably reviewed in the New York Times and Foreign Affairs.

Derk Jan Eppink, a Dutch civil servant, has done something unique. He has written a genuinely entertaining book about the European Commission.

Financial Times - 26 November 2007

Derk Jan Eppink dissects the Brussels bureaucracy as only an insider can. This book painfully exposes how MEPs transform into small, untouchable kings within their own empires.

Jean-Marie Dedecker - Belgian politician and party leader

Empire of little Kings

An insightful look into the mechanics of the EU institutions

In 2015, I published ‘Empire of little Kings’ on daily life in the European Parliament, as they are political nomads crisscrossing the continent, if not the globe.

The Limits of Europe

A series of conversations of Dutch EU-Commissioner Frits Bolkestein, with high-ranking members of the European Parliament.

Plea for a United Europe of States

“Power in Europe is not vested in people, but in a political-bureaucratic complex which functions all by itself.”

Articles

As a columnist: During my entire career I have been a columnist with various newspapers and magazines. I started with the Flemish newspaper De Standaard (www.standaard.be) mainly writing on Belgian and European politics. In Dutch media, I published columns in NRC Handelsblad (www.nrc.nl) and De Volkskrant (www.volkskrant.nl). I started publishing columns on European and American politics since I lived in New York and covered American presidential elections (2008 and 2016).

I became a ‘Republican-watcher’ and published columns in Elsevier Weekblad (www.ewmagazine.nl) in the Netherlands and equally in the Flemish weekly Knack (www.knack.be).
